Détails de l'observation
Slow motion (1/4 speed) video and a photo attached. The video shows an owl attempting to pounce on a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. This clip was the last few seconds of the original-speed video attached to the snake record included in this eBird check-list. One or more juvenile owls were watching an oddly tame House Finch hopping and weakly flying around (we fed it peanuts in the morning). Shannon and an owl suddenly watched the rattlesnake strike and catch the House Finch. Malcolm soon began recording the snake moving over the dead finch. The snake took the finch into its mouth and whipped its body a few times before the owl suddenly pounced on the snake's tail and the snake got away by striking back and missing. In the photo, the oldest juvenile owl (on the left) has 2 horns, Malcolm in the middle has 1 horn, and the youngest owlet (on the right) has no horn(s) yet.
