The mystery bird from the 25th reveals itself! Tentative ID based on similarities between this bird and California populations. Here are Peter Pyle's comments on the bird: "I just compared the Midway bird with juveniles at Macaulay Library and would agree that the best fit would seem to be from North American populations of Common Gallinule. I noticed variation in back color, head color, extent of white to the frontal area, bill size and color, leg color, and presence of white fringing to the flanks and side feathers. The only birds that I could find that match all of these characters are North American, for example those at this checklist from California: https://ebird.org/checklist/S96200140 Juvenile Hawaiian Gallinules that I could locate had brighter legs and bills and lacked the white side mottling, for example the bird at this checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S82438756 Juvenile Eurasian Moorhens are quite variable and I could find a few matches for most of these characters, but not all features. Most had duller bills and legs, smaller bills, grayer heads, and/or darker or warmer brown backs. Some were paler brown. Few showed as much white in the frontal area and very few showed white fringing to the side and flank feathers; those that did, such as these birds from Czechoslovakia https://ebird.org/checklist/S97967264 https://ebird.org/checklist/S100009421 are darker and duller and differ from the Midway bird in other ways. Birds from eastern Asia show most of these same differences, including lack of white side fringing, and do not resemble the Midway bird in other ways, such as these from South Korea https://ebird.org/checklist/S47568014 and these from Japan https://ebird.org/checklist/S116684635 https://ebird.org/checklist/S73656418 It is primarily in juvenile feathering but has begun the preformative molt of body feathers on the neck, back, and sides."
