Détails de l'observation
***Mega; first county record. Third state record of Short Billed Gull. Adult seen well roosted with RBGU at the landing 41.796801, -71.120667. Doing my routine scan of the RBGU for Mew Gull at the boat landing and there was one! All gulls flushed for no reason and I spent the next couple hours searching for it with no luck. Last seen flying up river. Always have checked here for MEGU since there are always such good roost of RBGU and today there was one. 200th species for the hotspot! Species ID: Fairly obvious MEGU and easily picked out immediately picked out among the RBGU. Small well rounded head with small thin greenish bill lacking darker ring of RBGU. Mantle just a shade darker than RBGU and showing much more prominent white crescents. Much more extensive white on primary tips than RBGU. Subspecies ID: I initially had this down as Larus.c.Canus but after getting feedback from others I am now changing this to L. c. brachyrhynchus due to a couple factors. Main points below. - p8 has very reduced white tongue tip but still has long gray tongue. Other ssp have much darker p8 and no white tongue tip. - black on p9 does not extend primary coverts as in the other ssp - smugy pattern coming into breast much more well defined in other ssp - slight duskiness sub apically on the bill are within range of brachyrhynchus - overall much less black on the primaries and are p5-p6 symmetrical
