Détails de l'observation
This is actually a conservative estimate of total number in area. So I know what crossbills look like. But will need help with the type. Bill clearly overlapping at tips, and no white wing bars. Large bills compared to RECR I have seen in the Pacific NW. They seemed to be everywhere in the trees near the Jacob Lake parking lot. They were eating snow like crazy. There was just a few snow patches near the USFS visitor center and they would congregate on the patches and scoop up snow. I am not sure why they seemed so thirsty. A nice mix of age/sex ranging from fully red males, mixed red and yellow males, brown females, yellow females or young males and very brown streaky juvenile plumage birds. Unfortunately one was seen dead apparently from visitor center window strike. This irruption has to be one of the coolest things around!!!
