First state record Winter Wren in Oregon. Photos in eBird checklist.
Detalles de la observación
Continuing rarity, amazing find by Caleb and Courtney! An overdue state first. The wren was chipping spontaneously as I walked up to the site a little before 7:00 am, and it teed up for a couple of minutes for good views, photos, and recordings. It seemed to have been responding to a pygmy-owl that was calling in the area. I left it there at 7:15. The recording is with a Sennheiser shotgun mic and Marantz recorder, from only a few yards. I agree with others that the vocalizations and pale plumage are distinctive. Directions: The wren was in a relatively open tree plantation at these coordinates: 44.606149, -123.328976. From the Oak Creek parking lot/trailhead (44.603866, -123.332538), take the steep trail that goes up the hillside immediately on the right side of the gate. Go about a quarter mile until the trail forks. I took the left fork and the wren was a dozen yards farther up the trail, on the righthand (uphill) side, between the trail and the dead-end road landing.
