Pair of flamebacks with bright reddish upperparts, blank yellow face, male with red crest and female dull yellow crest; both with laced and netlike black pattern on breast and thin lines up throat. Underparts plain yellow-buff. Tail dark brown or brownish black. Legs and feet dull yellowish with greenish tinge. Bill gray. In flight, wings showed black and yellow buff bands across remiges. Calls and drums like other Chrysocolaptes [lucidus] birds.
