It flaked off the bark, then pounded at the wood to dig the hole. It ate quite a bit from it.
Detalles de la observación
Continuing male. Spent over half an hour flaking off bark and pounding deep holes in different spots on the same pine tree trunk. It seemed to be getting a lot of food. (Original photos attached.) It then flew over to stop briefly on a few other trees nearby before crossing the trail and working on the side branch of a large and very old white pine tree I had seen it on before. Unfortunately another Woodpecker then flew onto the middle of that tree, saw the Black-backed and chased it away. The Black-backed didn’t go far and circled back to work briefly on another tree before I lost track of it.
