NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 3. Bulk reel: 281 Weather: Clear, hazy. Time: 6:45 to 7:00 AM. 139 tape. A single bird had been calling ("singing") ~ 10-15 m. up in a vine tangle in the trees; the "song," which had been going on for some 5 min. at least when I decided to record it, is the same as that which appears later in the recorded cut [blank]. Just as I got "focused" and before I could begin recording, the bird flew down to the undergrowth ~ 25 m. away and there began a chattering song in interaction between two birds. Whether this was a conflict situation, or an invitation between a pair, I don't know. The recording begins with this vocal interaction. a) Vocal interaction between two birds. This terminates suddenly and one bird begins "song." In latter part there is also heard Syndactyla guttulata. Quality: 1. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. b) After playback, "song" by one bird. Quality: 1. Level: +3. 15 ips. c) Some "tripled calls" given later. Quality: 3. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. A little later, after some minutes of silence, the bird flew from the undergrowth below road giving two "triplet" calls and alighted in tree beside road where it gave a couple more similar calls. Just as I got focused on it, it flew to undergrowth above road, giving two more such calls in flight; these appear in this recording (out of "focus"). Note: The 15 ips speed gives better quality, i.e. higher gain without tape saturation. (There's still some!!).
