NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 7. Bulk reel: 40 I had been working in this spot with Otus guatemalae for several days and went there @ ~ 10:30 PM to continue that work. During 15 minutes I heard nothing and so played a field tape of songs of O. guatemalae and was surprised when almost at once from close by but on south side of road I heard the "conflict calls" of O. choliba. I played then a field tape of choliba. A bird came closer and started to sing, first with the timid song. This was recorded by stages to full song. In background at end can hear O. guatemalae which then had started to sing and also hear, closer by, a "conflict call" of choliba, apparently the mate of the bird in focus. Then there are more reactions to playback, including some bother sounds similar to conflict calls. Bird was then collected and proved to be a male. Quality: 1-2. Level: +10. Sound stimulation was (other): playback O. guatemalae. Response to playback: Approach.
