Media notes
Crepuscular song about 10 min after playback, so probably no longer responding to that, from a bird perched about 3m up in small tree in open arum-dominated cocha edge habitat. The fact that there are several territorial pairs around the lake at this time of year, combined with a recording of recently fledged birds from 2012 (identified at the time as M. ferox) means that there are nesting M. swainsoni in Ecuador! Nearly all-dark mandible and lack of 'masked' effect suggest that these are phaeonotus of northern South America, not pelzelni or ferocior from southern South America.
