Observation details
Jackson called me to say that he had found a strange bird in the museum driveway. I came outside to find this rail hiding under a bush in a planter bed. I called a few more people over and we wrangled it with a dip net. Photos and recordings in the hand. We compared the bird to our series of specimens at the museum and most characters appear to match King Rail over Clapper, including the flank pattern, back color, and chest color. The amount of gray on the side of the head was rather more extensive than on most of our King Rails, and could be explained by individual variation or perhaps with hybridization with Clapper. According to Van Remsen, this is the third record for East Baton Rouge Parish.
