Observation details
Huge hummer, dwarfed nearby broad-tails. Tail long equaling 1/3 or more of the total body length. Tail also huge when spread, as it often was. Wings broad, sickle-shaped and about the same length as tail, when perched. Bill well proportioned to body and gently decurved. Pale drab below with contrasting clean white vent and dusky undertail coverts. Dull greenish on head, brightest on crown and anpe. Bold white post-ocular stripe bending down behind eye. A second less bold white stripe runs downward from base of bill along leading edge of auriculars, setting off dusky auriculars. Greenish upper back and rump contrasting with more bronzey lower back. Wings grayish-brown. Tail a very dark blue color above with very large bold white tail corners. Loud, high, penetrating "seek" call distinctive. Wing strokes noticeably slow. Very aggressive to all other hummingbirds.
