Observation details
Relatively large, chunky shorebirds with extremely long straight bills, now in breeding plumage. Their mostly rusty-orange underparts indicate that these birds are of the “hendersoni” subspecies, or Prairie Group. Distinguished from the very similar Long-billed Dowitcher by faintly spotted upper breasts, sparsely barred flanks, and white undertail coverts with dark spots. Long-billed Dowitcher would exhibit a finely barred upper breast, heavily barred flanks, and rusty-orange undertail coverts with dark barring.
