Observation details
FRS, submitted 04.08.18 - I'm so proud of myself, although I will have to edit photos and add them later. I'm sure I have ten (10). Continuing bird from 04.07.18. This one did not leave the same day like the one seen earlier in the week at Hunter Lake in Elkhart Co. Believe that one was an immature. This is a non-breeding adult. Believe it has been here since at least 04.06.18 as I was sure I saw a larger grebe with a long bill from Prickett Park upstream near the dam, but could not locate it in the approaching dusk when I came to the embankment. Now we need to find a Red-necked Grebe. Mid-sized loon with a white face, cheeks, chin and throat and with a grayish brown nape and neck. Crown slightly darker and extending down onto face a little, but small dark eye beneath this dark extension and within the lower white of the face. White spotted dark back and dark wings when extended without any noticeable lighter areas. Thinner bill, silver/gray in color. Bird was not as close to the embankment today, but well viewable and coming closer to the embankment at times. There was virtually no wind today and the river was calm, compared to the waves and strong westerly winds the evening before which may have been the cause for it's closeness to the embankment yesterday. Bird was foraging more also. Disappearing from sight sometimes for minutes. Timed one submersion and it was 60 seconds. others were longer. Foraging approximately in line with the small jut that protrudes from the south shore near where the nest box is. Evidently this is a shallow area as the boats tend to go to the north to go around it.
