Observation details

Dark brown birds with darker, blackish heads and sloping bills & forehads. The birds were slightly larger than the Long-tailed Ducks they were mixing with. At one point one of the birds flapped its wings showing white patches. One of the birds appears to have a whitish spot near the base of the bill but otherwise no white facial markings were discernible even with a 60x scope eyepiece. For additional photos of the scoters see the Long-tailed Duck entry in this checklist.
