Observation details
Second year bird continues in Talbert Lake. Associating with Black-crowneds. Similar in size and appearance to Black-crowned Night Heron. Structurally longer legged and necked than Black-crowned. Bill thicker and heavier and more blunt tipped than Black-crowned. Face and head mostly dark gray with thick pale crown stripe, pale chin, and diffuse pale patch below and behind eyes. Back feathers with dark gray centers unlike the even tan color of the young Black-crowneds present.
