Observation details
Sorry; not much of a photo! Taken with a phone camera. The Whooping Crane was feeding in a field along with a few Sandhills. We did have a spotting scope with us, and we were able to record the Whooper's leg bands. Observed for about 20 minutes at about 7 or 7:30 PM, Sunday, May 5, 2013. A friend of mine discussed this sighting the next day with staff at this MDNR-run refuge/farm, who confirmed that the Whooper had been in the area for a few days. The MDNR staff member also stated that this is not the first Whooper they've had there; he said that a few years earlier, another had been hanging around for a few days, but that bird ended up being killed by coyotes. Leg bands were: Left, top to bottom: green, white, red Right, top to bottom: white, green
