Observation details
My Rock Wren quest took me on a hike from Homer Tunnel (doh) up a bolder-strewn drainage towards a cascading waterfall. This is the world of the New Zealand Rock Wren, and a rugged world it is. I sat very quietly at a few different spots, and twice found myself at the apparent centre of a pair's territory, seeing 4 birds in total. It is a very cool and different-looking bird, and one worthy of a bigger name, perhaps something like Bob-tailed Bolder-Hopper.
