Observation details
Originally from Africa, this species crossed the Atlantic Ocean and colonized South America, later spreading up to North America. They are more prone to forage on insects than fish. They have difficulty compensating for the diffraction of light at the surface of water, therefore prefer to forage above water. Nesting occurs later in the year than other wading birds since they are keying in on peaks of insect populations rather than receding waters in the dry season.
