First-winter
Observation details
First-winter found on beach in the afternoon, loosely associating with nearby gathering of Laughing Gulls and terns. Large but relatively slender gull, exhibiting typical first-cycle plumage including blackish inner primaries with no pale window, generally dark wing coverts, neat black tail band, lightly barred white rump and uppertail coverts, and second-generation mantle and scapular feathers. I am very familiar with this species, which is common in the UK where I live, and I spend a great deal of time studying this larid and its congeners. Photographed
