Observation details
Observed off the coast first noticed Fishing near pelicans (even seemed to be loosely associating with them on one shallow dive); dove headfirst into the water from about 10 or 15 feet up, then upon surfacing went to resting on water. The shallow dive and overall brown color are what caught my attention. Long pointed wings, thickly based pointed beak with facial expression of booby or gannet. Overall coloration dark brown, except for lighter brown belly seen briefly when it stretched its wings. No speckling on wing feathers as would be expected in juvenile northern gannet. No white on tail coverts as would be in juvenile gannet. Also lighter belly with typical pattern of brown booby can be seen in photo with wings open. Observed through spotting scope about 1/4 mile off shore. Photos taken with 300mm lens and then digiscoped with cell phone through spotting scope.
