Observation details
Driving home, I spotted this bird at the woods edge feeding on the ground on state road 59 near the intersection with Hwy 90. Dark elongated bird, posture not upright as a chicken. Golden speckling on body and fine barring on very thin pointed tail feathers. Red eye ring is widest at the front of the eye. The closest comparable bird was a female melanistic Ring necked Pheasant. We are bordered on the north, east and south by quail hunting plantations here and I have heard that Pheasants were introduced as game birds. I have often wondered if some might become established.
