Observation details
we observed 24 Red Crossbills during the day: one group of 11; one group of five, several groups of two to three, and singletons. All RECRs occurred in areas with high densities of Red Spruce. Glenn Hodgkins recorded the calls from each group using his iPod. Glenn subsequently submitted the best sonograms to Matt Young, at Cornell, for analysis. From the calls recorded from the group of 11, Matt estimated that these 11 included at least 7 "Type 10" and 4 Type 3" - believed to be only the third time that Type 3's have been documented in Maine, the first two on Monhegan in the fall/winter of 2012/2013. Finally, among all 24, we estimate a ratio of 80% males to 20% females.
