Observation details
One lone flyover but then a lone pair also flew in. The female dove down into some dense younger conifers, not at the top but rather among them such that I couldn't see her. She may even have gone to the ground under them. Meanwhile a male was sitting high in the deciduous tree over her, singing gently and giving soft calls. Soon he became excited and the female appeared out of the cover with a glob of material in her beak. It was not a cone or a stick but some other collection of small items. She beelined to the north toward some pines where I've had crossbills all winter. He followed in hot pursuit. I intend to follow up further but this strongly suggests nest building and I'm sure of the type ID.
