Observation details
From 'Bull's Birds of New York State' © 1998. Nonbreeding: Secretive and not known to flock, it is a rarely reported migrant at any season. The extreme dates of 20 Mar and 23 Nov reported by Bull (1974) remain unchanged. Bull's maxima of eight in Madison Square Park, Manhattan 15 May 1921 and six at East Hampton, Suffolk Co. 14 Oct 1933 will undoubtedly survive for the foreseeable future. Although it is extremely rare in winter, there are two such recent records: Great Kills, Richond Co. 10 Jan 1977 (KB 27:116) and Montauk [Point], Suffolk Co. 16 Dec 1989 (KB 40:127). There were none reported on 1960-1989 CBCs. [Editor's note: Current high count for NYS is 40 at Fresh Kills Park, Richmond Co. 30 Aug 2015 (https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S30023857).] URL: http://nybirds.org/KB_IssuesArchive/y1977v27n2.pdfURL:
