Observation details
Very much like female Ruddy Duck however noticeably smaller and darker. Flanks were not as pale or contrasty against the back, but dark mottled. Bill was deep and somewhat shorter than Ruddy's. Most significantly, the birds showed a pale supercilium which combined with the dark stripe across face, produced an overall striped face appearance quite different from female Ruddy. They kept to the very shallow water and frequently became hidden in the emergent vegetation. Well seen and photographed.
