Observation details
Found in the small wooded area on West Tom Owens Cay; both of us got excellent views as close as 6 meters while the bird was perched motionless in open shade. The bird was about the size of a Ruddy Quail-Dove, but lacked any trace of ruddy coloring. It was gray brown above, lighter buffy brown below. Its eye was orange with a red orbital ring; bill dark pinkish red; legs and feet red; crown had gray to vinaceous gray highlights in sunlight; line through eye slightly darker than background color; broad line under eye from chin to nape lighter brown; there was also a lighter area on the throat separated from the pale chin by the darker gray brown of rest of plumage. Nothing in the head pattern was boldly marked. There were some gray feather edges to the lesser and median wing coverts giving a scaling effect; the greater wing coverts were grayer overall than rest of bird. Flight feathers (remiges and rectrices) were darker than rest of bird; however, the upper tail coverts were pure gray like greater wing coverts, lighter gray toward tip of each feather. The lower flanks and under tail coverts had smudgy dark brown barring. The base of the tail appeared lighter than distal portion of tail and richer brown than rest of bird, but this was not seen well.
