Matching Thayeri pattern on primaries.
Observation details
Herring Gull size gull in flight which means it was larger than the Ring billed Gulls it was flying with. All white under wing, except for the dark band at the tip of five outermost primaries. Upper side of the wing and back was gray which is typical of an adult bird. Jet black restricted largely to the 6 outermost primaries. This bird shows a very dark black color in the wingtips which is typical of adult Thayer's, but is not in range of Kumlien's which would be much grayer or frosted gray color. Olsen shows this bird¿s pattern on the wing tip chart on Plate 16 as a Thayer's Gull. The black in the primaries extends all the way down to P5 on both wings which is typical for Thayer's and not found in Kumlien's. P9 shows more of a black extension rising from the tip and in the outer edge of the web with a slight break in the black which is also shown on plate 16 (Thayer's Gull). This gull has dark pink legs. The iris is dark but lighter than expected to find in the majority of Thayer's Gulls but again this is a mark that can be found in range of Thayer's Gull or Kumlien's Gull. The bill is slightly heavy for Iceland/ Kumlien's and in more range of Thayer's Gull.
