Observation details
This was the new species for our neighborhood. It was a female. This species can be seen with some regularity about 8 miles north of us at Big Morongo Preserve at 1500 feet higher in elevation and also about 10 miles south down in Palm Springs at 600 feet lower elevation. This same disparity also applies to Western Bluebirds as well. I'm thinking extensive big tree cover and maybe also large glassy areas must play a big role in it. See a few pictures of the one in my yard attached. I'm still not sure why our golf course does not appeal to them. We do get Northern Flickers occasionally as well a once a year or so a Red-breasted and Red-naped Sapsucker or two..
