Showing the two ICGUs that had been in flight after landing on the frozen pond surface. The kumlieni with the white primaries is to the right center, and the other ICGU-thayeri is at the front to the right. The shape of the two birds, bill size and wing projection is basically identical. The kumlieni had whitish primaries, lacking any dark coloration, that were the same color as the mantle, and much lighter than those of the immature HEGU behind it and the thayeri in front. The ICGU-thayeri had brownish primaries that were darker than the mantle.
Observation details
FRS, submitted 01.10.18 Continuing 1st cycle bird. Seen on the frozen pond and in flight. Left the pond @ 402 PM. Viewed primaries clearly with scope at rest and as it stretched it's wings in an uplift just prior to taking flight.Outer primaries the same color as the light colored mantle and with no black coloration and appeared translucent in flight and whitish at rest. All black bill. Photos.
