Observation details
Six drakes and two hens on pond, joined by ten Mallards. Likely "put down" by the heavy rain/sleet mix that arrived in the early afternoon, these ducks(which very well were pushed into the region by the major freeze-up in the region eliminating preferred wintering habitat on large bodies of water) apparently arrived with the Mallards and spent an hour-and-a-half on the pond before departing just after 4:00pm. Observed feeding on algae, drinking, and preening. These are the first diving ducks ever observed on the pond, which is less than a foot deep.
