Immature Red-masked Parakeet. Identified as part of a family group of Red-masked and by red underwing linings.
Observation details
I heard a group of Red-masked/Mitred Parakeets calling and thought they sounded different than the Mitred that I'm used to hearing every day. Sure enough I made an effort to track them down and they turned out to be an apparently pure flock of Red-masked. Visually, they were quite different that Mitred, with extensive red on head, fewer (or no?) red flecks on the thighs, and obvious red at the bend of the wing and on the underwing linings (these birds flap fast enough that getting good looks at the underwings is difficult, but clearly there was extensive red). Also the orbital rings were brilliant yellow, which I think is normally white on Mitred. Several apparent immatures were present: Imm RM had a green head with limited red flecking on the crown, forehead and face. However, they also showed red at the bend of the wing and on the wing linings. The red on the bend of the wings was more limited in the immatures than in the adults and as you can see in the photos it was not always visible on perched birds. Voice was similar but deeper and more nasal than Mitred Parakeet There were apparently no mitred in the group.
