NOTES: Beh. context: UNKNOWN;NZ NATIONAL FILM UNIT TRIP. SHRILL 'KI-WI' WITH MALE HAVING A HIGH-PITCHED VOICE; THE FEMALE LOWER AS IN THE OTHER TWO SPECIES. THIS SPECIES OFTEN GIVES A CALL OF ONLY ONE SYLLABLE. THE TWO TYPES ARE ON THIS TAPE. THE FIRST CALL ON TAPE, WI MALE(S); FEMALE(S)TH ECHO EFFECT, WAS MADE WITH PARABOLA. EACH TIME A KIWI CALLED, I TURNED ON THE MACHINE. I NOW HAVE TAPED THE 3 SPECIES OF APTERYX WHICH ARE ALL DIFFERENT. GREAT SPOTTED KIWI HAS AN UPSLURRED TRILLED CALL; THE LITTLE SPOTTED A MORE OR LESS EVEN CALL. Response to playback: No response. Elevation: 5 m.
