field sketches of 2 female plumage King Eiders, Fulford Harbour, Salt Spring Island.
Observation details
2 female plumage birds. Body colour, brown, overall impression was of two large brown ducks. Eye dark?, bill dark, no strong facial markings, although area over eye and at base of bill were paler. Bill shape unusual for duck, but not the same as a female scoter, base of bill extend ng far into the face and towards the eye. Eye set far back in the head. Scollaping on sides of chest and along sides. Dinstinct "grin" look where mouth extended back and upward towards the eye. Long wing feathers extending over the wing on the lower back of the birds. Light conditions excellent. Birds seemed completely unaware of the ferry coming towards them and barely moved out of the way of the boat, we got within 2 m of the two of them. Sketches made on the spot and without reference to field guides. Also seen by Richard Fraser and Nancy Madson. Bill shape and morphology distinctive, readily separates this species even from other species of eiders. Accepted by Victoria Bird records committee 2013.
