Observation details
The photos (attached) of the bird at rest exhibit the following features (per Olsen and Larsson 2004) consistent with adult Slaty-backed Gull: • slaty-grey mantle, not as dark as that of GBBG; • marginally larger than nearby HERG; • stocky - deep-bodied, thick-necked, relatively short-winged; • fairly straight yellow bill with minimal gonys angle, red gonydeal spot; • dark streaking on upper breast, neck and head; • pale eyes, bright pink legs; • conspicuous white mirrors decreasing in size from P6-P10; • broad white scapular and tertial crescents connecting to narrow white secondary tips. Notably, Kirk Zufelt documented a SBGU at the nearby SSM landfill on Jan 12, 2012, two months later. Photos on Kirk's blog here: http://larusology.blogspot.ca/2012/01/slaty-backed-gull-sault-ste-marie.html. Same bird? Dec. 18/2017: Report submitted to the OBRC.
