Observation details
Observed with various binocs and scopes at distances down to 30m both on Lake Diefenbaker, as well as downstream from the Coteau Creek Power Station at Gardiner. All birds in winter plumage: Large, long-winged, deep-bellied gulls. Fairly long and thick bills, with obvious gonydeal angle. Heads were strongly sloping and relatively flat-crowned. Adult birds: White head and neck with extensive dark streaking; yellow bills with red gonydeal spot; pale yellow iris framed by yellow-orange orbital ring; pale gray back and wings; blackish primaries with white tips; white tail and rump; pink legs. Third-Winter birds: At least three individuals. Similar to adult birds, but noted more extensive mottling on head and neck, with dark smudging around eye; bill pinkish-gray with dark band; also observed some brown present in wing coverts, as well as traces of a dark tail band; pink legs. New for the WBL!
