Observation details
Large hummingbird. Male. Completely dark rump (seemed dark blue towards the top turning to black down the tail. Two bold white stripes on its face. Heard wings and chipping when it flew in. Sat perched in a tree for a long time. Throat appeared bluish-gray, but not very dark. Back is greenish and wings are dark/purplish-gray. Behavior - seemed very nervous. Constantly quickly looking around. Stretched at one point. When it flew and fed, tail was all dark with large white spots on the corners. Very large hummingbird. Wings are very loud. Underside of tail had a large, white tip. When perched, wings fall short of the tail and it liked to have its wings tucked under its tail. Saw a couple of brief flashes of blue on it's throat. Short bill, compared to the size of the hummer - looked about 1" long. Briefly sang while sitting next to us. Scratched once and flitted it's tongue out several times. Another buzzed by while the first one was perched. Jim said it was a male with a nick in its gorget. A female also came to the feeder. I was sitting about 1 foot away from the feeder, but she appeared smaller and thinner than the male (saw him from about 5-6 feet away). Male appeared thinner from closer, too. Male - head and scapulars are green, front and back more of a dirty white. Back has a little green mixed in. Green isn't real brilliant (at least in the shade). More of a brownish green up close. Up close, tail appeared to be dark green and black. Upperside - bottom half of tail has white edges that extend around the bottom in a U shape. Front edge of wings have a white line running down them when looking straight on. Coverts were very noticeable and short. Appeared to have brown eyes. Bill is slightly chunkier towards the tip. Saw its bright blue throat! From behind while in flight, the all dark rump and tail are striking. Has a white dot behind the eye that is part of one of the white facial stripes. Called frequently. Got great, up close looks. 2 females at the feeders at the same time - they did not want to share. Perched male does not chase them away, but does chase the other male. 2 males and 2 females.
