2 male Barrow’s Goldeneye courting a female
Observation details
Active courtship displays. Males stretching out head and neck in up and down motion, and lowering head and neck parallel to water surface and fending off nearby males. Females staying very close and apparently paying close attention to the displaying males. These Barrow’s located more in the Colville River channel rather than the more open water body of nearby Lake Roosevelt, where the Common goldeneyes were found today. Perhaps the Barrow’s like more privacy during courtship.
