Another shot of the feathered tarsus
Observation details
Dark morph Rough-legged Hawk. While driving back from Hagg lake on the 47 I noticed a dark black buteo on the top of a small tree. I pulled over and was able to get some distant pics and video. Here are a couple of key observations I made to decipher it from a dark morph Harlan’s hawk. It flew from the top of a straggly tree to the ground where it stayed for a while and then flew up to a barb wired pole where it delicately stood. I observed its feathered tarsus when it landed on the pole. It’s primaries appeared to reach the end of the tail. I counted 4 white bands on the upper tail. I’ve uploaded screen shots from the video.
