First San Luis Obispio County record. Adult in breeding plumage. A small to medium sized tern, pale gray above white below, with a black cap through nape. The cap extended down the face to the lower edge of the eye. It had a stout black bill and black legs. In flight the bird showed a forked tail with shorter outer tail projections than a Forester's Tern and a dark trailing edge on the primaries. Did not associate with other gulls or terns.
