Grayish Hawaiian Petrel? (Photo by one of our group)
The first bird was initially thought to possibly be a dark morph Herald Petrel, but photos show a dark morph Wedge-tailed Shearwater (long, slender beak; smallish head; long, thin tail). Another bird looked like Juan Fernandez — grey dorsum with black W and a dark eye patch -- but photo shows its underwing had a thick black carpal patch indicating Hawaiian P (see photo below). Awaiting more photos of this bird.
