NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #42. Bulk reel #518 a) Natural song. Bird #1. Quality: 1. Level: 0, +2. 7.5 ips. LN. 203 tape. Note that this bird's song is different in the beginning, suggesting somewhat the pattern of my captive WHITE CROWNS. b) ~6 km in this road. Now after playback. Quality: 1. Level: +2. Note that bird now uses both above type phrasing as well as one like the typical bouvronides phrase. Notes re: Cuts 42/44 - Bird #2 was collected, is now a mummified specimen. It is very heavily mottled on breast and sides, on breast being black with white marks rather than the converse. I heard it in natural song too and it never sang any but simple phrases, but it reacted to the playback of the song of Bird #1 just the same as it did to its own song. Bird #1 - not collected. Was similar to #2 but a little less heavily mottled, although still quite heavily mottled in comparison to eastern birds. Bird #3 collected, now a mummified specimen. It is even blacker on breast (i.e. with less white marking) than #2. (This bird was very thin.) This bird did a lot of chasing after females and gave flutter-flight displays and perched wing-quivering such as I've seen given by S. minuta. Bird #4, not recorded; collected and now a mummified specimen. It is heavily mottled but with more white than #2 and ~ like #1.
