NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #27. Bulk reel #513. 203 tape. a) 25 May 1973. 7:45 AM. Weather: Cloudy. This is very lilkely same bird as Cut 26; it is in same territory and apparently has same song. Quality: 3. Level: -5, -2. 6.5 ips. Std. Two song phrases given naturally. Quality: 1-2. Level: +2. 7.5 ips Std.. Song after playback. Quality: 1. Level: -3. 15 ips. Std. Nagra III recorder; EV 650 microphone; 24" parabola. Two birds were seen together on several occasions today; also seen yesterday; they behaved like a mated pair and only one of them sang. The presumed male (the singing bird) was darker (sooty olivaceous brown) and the presumed female was more brownish--definite sexual dimorphism, more pronounced than I'd noticed previously. (This difference is obvious but not great--a clarification made to avoid later misinterpretation!) b) 31 May 1973. 7:45 AM. Weather: Fair. Natural song; no doubt same bird. Quality: 1-. Level: +5. 7.5 ips. LN. Nagra IV recorder; Sennheiser 405 microphone; 36" parabola. Bird responded to playback immediately when first tried and when he flew over he was followed by the female. Later on he did not respond and the pair then left together, apparently going off to forage. c) 8 June 1973. 6:40 AM. Weather: Cloudy, fair. Natural song. Quality: 1. Level: +5. 7.5 ips. LN. Nagra IV recorder; Sennheiser 405 microphone; 36" parabola. Although I was present from before 6:00 AM, I did not hear the bird sing until ~ 6:30-35 AM. The pair was together (although I hadn't noticed the female when I made the recording. The male reacted indifferently to playback when first tried but afterwards didn't react at all. He was more interested in the female and kept following her wherever she went, sometimes singing in that regard but not with regard to any playback I tried.
