Media notes
Sula Pitta Couple. From our trip to Peleng Island photographing the Sula Pitta, we have observed that the data on the Sula Pitta (Erythropitta dohertyi) in HBWis inaccurate. It is mentioned in HBW that the male has a brown iris and female a white iris. However we have seen both the male and female at the same time, with the male performing a mating ritual in front of the female. Both of them had white irises. Speaking to the local guide, he also confirmed that all the adult pitta he had seen before had white irises. Only the juvenile Sula Pitta has a brown iris. The photo I've uploaded here shows the picture from HBW indicating the difference in the irises of the male and female and the two birds shot from our trip. The right is the female and left is the male. There is no sexual dimorphism in this species. Original IBC location name and coordinates: Kokolomboi (-1.2315,122.8747). Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: April 8, 2019.
