NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #FL-2. Bulk reel #498 Song type 1 = SO-SOO-la; 2 = SO-SO-LA; 3 = SO-LAA. Weather: Fair. Note: A type (short) 1-2 heard in background at beginning. a) 1730 hours. Bird #3: A ~ type 2 that developed a "yodel" when I initiated type 1 to bring this bird closer. It was originally a "pure" type 2; another bird with ~ type 2 heard in background at beginning and later. Quality: 2 & 1-2. Level: +3. 203 tape. LN. Nagra SN recorder; AKG microphone; no parabola. b) ~1800 hours. Same bird ~ 20' later, after I went to fetch the N-IV and parabola. Quality: 1. Level: +3. Nagra IV recorder; Sennheiser 405 microphone; 36" parabola. 203 tape. LN. In the late (after 1700 hours) PM of 11 July 1973, in the woods by the main entrance road, I heard a number of birds (~types: short 3, ~1-2, 2). However, when I went close to several and whistled, the birds became silent or moved away. One bird finally responded and on first approach came up to within two m. of me but always remaining hidden by foliage. It then moved a short distance away and could not be brought closer again. This is type 2. (Type 2 but with a "yodel"; presumably due to stress.). Habitat: Forest.
