Observation details
!!! Rare! Appears to be the 9th GH county record (on eBird) and only the third fall record, most being from winter in the Chehalis River Valley. This the first record for the county on the outer coast, and only the second for the state away from Neah Bay. Definitively photographed. Buffy breast, strong malar stripe and mustache, bold buffy supercilium, pale lores, clean gray nape, and brown rump. Flight call higher pitched than Chipping and not descending, rising "swit." Was in the open area around the picnic tables at the main parking lot. Associating closely with a Savannah Sparrow, moved gradually east through the clearing and lost over a small rise in the northeast part of the clearing. Over the rise was the Copalis River which has nice brushy habitat, probably where this bird was headed. One of my favorite sparrows, a nice surprise!
