Connecticut Warbler calls beneath Screech Owl playback, pishing and talking.
Observation details
Seen very well at the edge of a pond in willow tree saplings. There were definitely at least two birds present, and I'm reasonably convinced there were three, though there was not enough evidence to prove it. We were looking at one and listening to one calling from brush behind us at one point, then looking at two soon later. Nobody saw a bird fly over, but it's certainly not impossible. Large thrush-like warblers, full bold eyering, dull brown hood on both birds, underparts past the hood (including undertail) were yellow, long undertail coverts and long wings giving the impression of a stubby tail, long bill (enhancing thrushiness). Calls were very distinctive "pwik" (one that I'd just been listening to a fair amount prior to this walk, thanks to a blog post by Paul Driver). Crummy audio recordings with a lot of "screech owl" and talking in the background are attached. Worth mentioning: about 5 minutes prior to finding these guys, walk leader Larry Lewis asked the group if we wanted to turn left or right at a split in the path. Nobody cared, so he picked the way that wound up leading us to the CONW spot. Luck...or instinct?
