Observation details
CRBC Accepted: Lesser Black-backed Gull (2008-179): Around 3:15P seen at the north end of Doheny State Beach in Dana Pt. there was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull that was loafing on the low tide-exposed cobble rocks near Puerto Place road. Lighting was perfect behind my back. This bird is smaller than the Western Gulls it was with, and about the same size as the predominate Califonia Gulls in the large gull flock. Bright yellow legs and feet, and bright yellow bill with large red gonydeal spot (and a small white spot at the distal edge). Gonydeal angle not large, and overall size of bill was near CAGU size and shape. White head with black flecking on the back of the head, some smudging around the eye, light iris, slaty-gray back with black primaries. A white spot was on the first primary about 1/2 inch below the black tip. White tail and belly, no noticable black on tail.
