Observation details
First noticed by Tii loafing with Bonaparte’s Gulls on floating wrack. Slightly smaller than BOGU. Light gray back, white underparts, dark spot behind the eye, dark cap, short bill. Several hundred yards away but viewed with a 20-60x scope in good lighting. After a short while, and after we approached a little closer (200 yards), it raised its wings and flew a short distance. Clearly charcoal gray underwings, no outer white primary patch and no dark (immature) markings on the upper wing. Viewed off and on for about ½ hour, preening, loafing, and in flight. Departed, following the majority of the gull stream into Herrick’s Bay to feed. Photos are marginal, included only because it’s the best I could get with my point and shoot (KJ).
