Media notes
Sooty Tern over Lake Norman, Mecklenburg Co. NC
Observation details
From boat on Lake Norman. Well seen and photographed by all observers. I observed the tern starting around 6:15 pm and it was in and out of view for about 20-25 minutes, always in flight over water. Clearly a tern from shape - forked tail, long, pointed wings, long pointed bill. Dark mantle - looking blackish at a distance. Underwing showed white wing-linings but underside of primaries dark. Black cap down to eye, but with a white forehead. Bill black. Separated from Bridled Tern by more extensively dark underside of primaries, color of mantle nearly black with no discernible contrast with black cap. White on forehead not as extensive. Tail mostly blackish above. Photos should be diagnostic: Other observers obtained better photos. Also present for comparison were Black Tern and two Common Terns.
